Self-Control in the Bible

Self-control is important to achieve worthwhile goals in life. Without self-control, much less time will be dedicated to important goals in life.

Your Body is a Temple of Holy Spirit

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:18-21

We were bought at a price, the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Because of Jesus sacrifice on the cross, whoever believes in Him will be saved by faith.

Our bodies are no longer our own. God commanded us to honor Him with our bodies. Thus, even simple things like eating or whatever we drink, we are commanded to do it for the glory of God.

It is between you and the Lord. Whatever you do, think about God whether it is pleasing to Him.

Thus, we can try to have self-control in what we eat and all things we do.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

1 Corinthians 10:31

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12:1-2

Better a patient person than a warrior,

one with self-control than one who takes a city.

Proverbs 16:32

Self-Discipline

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Self-control and discipline is important to achieve goals in this life, especially the goals that Christ set for your lives. We should know our priorities in life so that we do not waste much time running aimlessly.

When faced with trials and temptations, ask God in prayer to help you show a way out so you can endure it.

Fulfilling things in life do not come easily. Self-control is key in order to achieve great success in life which ultimately is for God’s glory.

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

1 Corinthians 10:13

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

James 1:19-21

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

Titus 2:11-13

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 1:5-8

Trust in the Lord

Trust in the Lord with all your heart

    and lean not on your own understanding;

in all your ways submit to him,

and he will make your paths straight

Proverbs 3:5-6

Whenever you feel lost or have a challenge in life, we can trust in the Lord to deliver us. When we submit to Him, He will make our paths straight.

Most of the time, our default response to problem is to depend on our own understanding. After all, we may think how will the problem be solved if we do not do anything?

The bible tells us on Proverbs 3:5 to trust in the Lord will all your heart. It did not tell us to partially trust the Lord, but to trust Him with all your heart.

We may ignore an idea altogether because our own understanding shows it is impossible to achieve. We may be missing out because of this. Nothing is impossible with God (Philippians 4:13). Consult God in prayer and trust Him to show you what His will is for your life, no matter if it seems impossible to achieve in the meantime.

At the same time, we may respond by solving a problem with our own might and strength and thinking we can do it on our own.

Self-control in always trusting in the Lord and not leaning on our own understanding is one of the most important things to remember in life. This goes against our default response to solving a problem, that is, depending on our own strength and our own will.

Remember the story of David where he was a young man, most likely a teenager or below 21 years old. Instead of being scared of Goliath the giant and turning away, he trusted in the Lord and focused on Him. David could have easily depended on his own understanding that he is not a warrior.

In the end, David defeated the giant as he trusted in the Lord with all his heart.

After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’

Acts 13:22
